An ancient punishment feared for its gruesome destruction of the body and resulting painful death, crucifixion is essentially a sadistic form of breaking bodily process by constriction and exposure. While a spectacle of great amusement and a popular method of torturing Jews and Christians (as both have perished in the past!), this method is too slow and resource-intensive to be used to execute this world's nearly three billion Judeo-Christians. The main significance of this punishment has been literally, coaxing Christians locked in delusional martyrdom toward their own expedient deaths. Its iconographic importance, it seems, outweighs its lasting effects on consciousness.
